The Indonesian Traffic Police (Polantas Indonesia) this week released a photo relevant to all private vehicle owners in the country: the brand new white license plate.

Polantas Indonesia first announced plans to replace existing black license plates for private vehicles several months ago, saying current plates are hard to read by CCTV cameras and other electronic law enforcement systems.

In an update on Tuesday, Polantas Indonesia Chief Inspector General Royke Lumowa told Kompas that they are currently working on changing the necessary regulations and working out the technicalities to make such a huge change happen.

We also got our first image of a sample of the white license plate — which is essentially the same as the current one but color swapped — on Polantas Indonesia’s Instagram page.

Polantas Indonesia is aiming to begin gradually replacing the license plates starting next year. Vehicles at the end of their five-year STNK (vehicle registration documents) validity will be among the first given the white license plates upon renewal of the documents.

Currently, private vehicles in Indonesia sport black license plates, public transportation vehicles sport yellow license plates while government owned vehicles sport red license plates. Diplomatic vehicles already sport white license plates.
