A coupon entitling users to IDR100K (US$6.68) off from a minimum purchase of IDR150K (US$10) sounds like it should be part of a very limited promo. That was supposed to be the case for a promo by Indonesian e-commerce giant Tokopedia, until the coupon code was shared widely online.

Only clients of UOB’s digital banking service TMRW were eligible for the coupon, but an oversight on Tokopedia’s part reportedly led to the coupon code being redeemed for numerous transactions by non-TMRW customers.

On Sunday, Tokopedia announced that it had unilaterally canceled all transactions made using the TMRW coupon.

“Tokopedia was unable to process a number of transactions as they did not meet the promo’s terms and conditions,” Tokopedia spokesman Ekhel Chandra Wijaya said.

“We apologize to users who could not carry out their transactions. The money that customers paid has been returned after the failure of the transactions as per guidelines.”

He did not reveal what caused Tokopedia’s oversight nor how much the e-commerce platform lost as a result of the gaffe.
