Police say thousands of people will be rallying tomorrow to commemorate National Awakening Day. The rallies will take place at a number of points throughout the city that will most likely lead to heavy congestion.
Jakarta Police Chief Inspector General Unggung Cahyono said police had not made any plans to close roads yet, but they were ready to do so based on how the situation developed.
“We will open and close the flow of vehicles and do traffic engineering,” Unggung said at Jakarta Police Headquarters today as quoted by Kompas.
Unggung said drivers should do their best to avoid points where rallies will take place. Those locations include the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout, the State Palace, and the front of the Parliament Building.
To secure the demonstrations, the police will deploy 7,610 personnel, including members of the local and national police as well as military personnel.
