Nazaruddin, a Tebet, South Jakarta citizen, was found dead by hanging yesterday, It is suspected the 32-year-old committed suicide because he was tangled up in heavy financial debt.

His neighbor, IM (42), said she noticed that Nazaruddin had become more withdrawn and reclusive over the past week, ever since a man started visiting Nazaruddin often at his home. The man is thought to be a debt collector from a motorcycle leasing company, from which Nazaruddin bought a motorcycle on credit a year ago.

“I suspect it was because of debt, because he (Nazaruddin) is a good guy, he doesn’t mess around so he has no enemies,” IM said, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.

The police have determined the death to be a suicide, as there were no signs of struggle other than rope burns on the victim’s neck. But the motive of the suicide is still being investigated.

Nazaruddin’s body was first found by a family member, Suparni (45), who walked into the victim’s room at around 3:30pm yesterday. But Nazaruddin was already hanging and lifeless at that point.

The victim’s body was taken to the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital in Salemba, Central Jakarta, for an autopsy.
