Authorities have shut down Tanah Abang station — one of Jakarta’s main railway hubs — this morning after the station was attacked by rioters, leaving passengers stranded.
According to reports, rioters threw stones at the station at around 7:35am today. Riot police fired tear gas into the crowds, but after the situation subsided for about 40 minutes, the rioters started to pelt stones at the station again. Passengers ran back into the station out of fear of being hit by rocks.
PT KAI Commuter Jabodetabek (KCJ) said in a statement that Tanah Abang station will be closed until further notice, and the passengers who are trapped there are going to be transported by train to nearby stations such as Manggarai and Palmerah. In anticipation of the riots, they are also prohibiting passengers from leaving the station through the Jatibaru and Petamburan exits.
