Police in Surabaya say they are investigating a viral video, allegedly taken at a hospital in the East Java city, showing a female patient in tears after suffering a traumatic sexual assault.

In the video, which went viral recently, the patient can be seen crying as she demands an apology from a male nurse who she accused of fondling her breasts while she was in a half-conscious state and unable to fight back after being given an unspecified form of anesthesia.

With what appears to be family members and other nurses surrounding her bed, the patient, clearly distressed and with her voice shaking, says to the male nurse, “Admit it! You fondled my breasts right? You went in there two or three times and twirled on my nipples right?”

The male nurse, with his head bowed down, muttered, “I made a mistake,” before going to shake the hands of the patient and the people in the room as a show of apology.

AKBP Sudamiran, head of the Crime Investigation Unit at the Surabaya City Police, said they are investigating the video.

“We went to the hospital in question last night,” he said, as quoted by Tribun today.

Sudamiran did not provide any more details about their investigation and which hospital the incident took place at.

Sexual harassment is unfortunately a huge problem in Indonesia. One of the most widely reported sexual harassment cases in recent times involved a woman who had her breast groped by a motorcyclist on a quiet alleyway in the city of Depok. The alleged culprit, who claimed that he did it “for fun”, may be jailed for up to two years and eight months for indecency.
