Supreme Court denies Jessica Wongso’s 20-year sentence appeal in high-profile coffee poisoning case

Jessica Wongso has exhausted nearly every legal option she has to appeal the 20-year prison sentence she received after being convicted of murdering her friend, Wayan Mirna Salihin, in January 2016.

Yesterday, the Indonesian Supreme Court denied Jessica’s appeal, three months after her appeal was denied by the Jakarta High Court.

“We are very disappointed. We had hoped that the Supreme Court would give us a better outcome,” said Jessica’s lawyer, Otto Hasibuan, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

A spokesman for the Supreme Court said that Jessica’s sentence remains at 20 years, without being increased or decreased by the judges.

After exhausting all appeal options, Jessica’s legal team said they are preparing a case review in which they will present new evidence to prove Jessica’s innocence.

Jessica was arrested by the Jakarta Metro Police after being accused of slipping cyanide into Mirna’s Vietnamese iced coffee at Olivier Café in Grand Indonesia mall in January 2016. The case generated huge interest in Indonesia, with crowds packing out the court during the trial and TV networks showing it live, as well as in Australia, where the victim and alleged murderer studied together at a design college.

Her guilty verdict was controversial due to the judges relying on circumstantial evidence to arrive at their decision.
