For Muslim boys, penile circumcision, locally known as sunat, is a terrifying snippy rite of passage they must all go through. But one South Jakarta boy is becoming quite a media sensation for the supposedly mysterious circumstances of his circumcision.
The 4-year-old boy, identified in the media as MMA, lives in the Cilandak district of South Jakarta and was briefly left home alone by his parents on Monday afternoon. According to his parents, when they returned, MMA showed them his genitals, which had somehow been neatly circumcised.
MMA’s case shocked the neighborhood in which the police were notified.
“A curious case has happened where a child was suddenly circumcised,” said Cilandak Police Chief Commissioner Sutanjo to the media, as quoted by Warta Kota yesterday.
MMA’s parents say they hadn’t scheduled for their son to get circumcised any time soon. They plan to take MMA to a hospital for a medical examination today.
MMA is reportedly in good health otherwise.
Hopefully MMA was snipped by an angel or some other supernatural being, because, unlikely as that would be, it would be a less frightening explanation than if some person had snuck into MMA’s house and circumcised him. But if there’s any lesson that MMA’s parents can take from this, it’s that they probably shouldn’t have left a 4-year-old at home alone.
