Students with Jakarta Smart Cards can ride the Transjakarta for free starting next Monday

The idea behind the Jakarta Smart Card (KJP) program is that students from low income families can take advantage of government funding for all things education-related (but not for karaoke).

Starting Monday, August 24, KJP holders can ride the Transjakarta for free so they don’t have to worry about transportation costs between home and school.

“We fully support the Jakarta provincial government in carrying out this program. This program is fully funded by the public service obligation budget,” said PT Transjakarta First Director Antonius Kosasih, as quoted by Vivanews today.

Since there have been many cases of KJP misuse in the past, PT Transjakarta slapped several terms and conditions on KJP holders who want to ride their buses for free.

First, the program only applies on school days from 5am to 7am and 12pm to 6pm.

Students must also wear their school uniforms and bring an ID card that matches their KJP. This is to prevent the program from being used by non-KJP holders.

Not that we want to give kids any ideas, but surely the 12pm to 6pm window is too long. That might just allow students to skip school in the middle of the day and hang out at malls instead.
