Universitas Indonesia revealed that student carelessness caused the pharmaceutical lab explosion at the university on Monday morning, injuring 14.

This incident is proof that smartphone addiction can potentially be fatal.

“This was purely caused by the carelessness of a student who was playing with their smartphone during lab. They were so into their smartphone they didn’t notice that the acidic content inside the distillation tube was evaporating. And then the tube exploded,” said Mahdi Jupri, Dean of the Pharmacy Faculty at Universitas Indonesia, as quoted by Warta Kota today.

Mahdi added that while the explosion itself was small, the shards of glass from the distillation tube that were sent flying were enough to injure 14 students in the lab. Mahdi said none of the students received chemical burns.

The university did not reveal the identity of the student who caused the explosion.
