The main commercial thoroughfare of Central Jakarta is set to once again close to motorized vehicles as Car Free Day (CFD) is returning this coming Sunday morning for the first time since March.

Jakarta Transportation Agency Head Syafrin Liputo confirmed the news this morning, saying that the stretch of road covering Jalan Sudirman and Jalan MH Thamrin will be open exclusively to those seeking to exercise outdoors between 6am and 2pm.

A crucial difference from CFDs prior to the coronavirus outbreak is that street food vendors will not be allowed until further notice.

“Street vendors are prohibited. For the time being CFD is only for exercise with the observation of health precautions,” Syafrin said.

One such precaution is that citizens with high temperatures or fever are prohibited from exercising at CFD, though it’s not clear how officials would enforce the rule in such a wide and open area.

CFD was last held on March 8. Last week, the event partially returned with the opening of bike lanes on the commercial thoroughfare.

Jakartans seem to be eager for some outdoor exercise following months of partial lockdown measures in the capital. Earlier this month, thousands flocked to the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) sports complex for exercise and selfies when the facility reopened.
