For many, college is a place for young people to live independently for the first time in their lives, allowing them to grow into responsible adults. But if Indonesian Social Minister Khofifah Indar Parawansa has her way, the government may soon treat college students just like little children.
During a talk at the Sultan Agung Islamic University in Semarang on Friday, Khofifah said she’s worried that pre-marital sex is on the rise in Indonesia, so she’s recommending that college dorm rooms get rid of their doors so students can be more easily monitored and won’t engage in “intimate” relations with each other.
Seriously. A minister said this.
Khofifah also reserved special mention for a group of people who face enough discrimination as it is without the government’s help.
“What’s even more dangerous is [the sexual relations] between man and man, woman and woman,” she said, as quoted by Tribun.
“I recommend that all college dorm rooms be door-less.”
Khofifah said that she got the idea a while back when she visited the college dorm to an unspecified university. There, the rooms had no doors, which apparently was a preventative measure to stop pre-marital sex in dorms.
Besides violating the privacy rights for people who are legally adults, wouldn’t door-less college dorm rooms lead to other problems? Like theft, perhaps?
In any case, college students can rest easy because this probably won’t happen anytime soon since Khofifah didn’t say if she was actually going to officially enact this as a policy in Indonesia. If she did, we imagine it would only apply to public universities.
