There are some crazy scenes going on out on the streets of Central Jakarta today, with an estimated 10,000 public transport drivers taking to the streets to protest against ride-hailing apps like Uber and GrabCar. Videos spreading online show that some protesters are violently targeting other taxi drivers who choose not to join the protest.
But this video is BY FAR the craziest we’ve seen so far from today’s protest (we hope it doesn’t get crazier than this, for everyone’s sake).
Before you watch it, we warn you that the video contains elements of violence that some viewers may find disturbing.
There is no information from the media or officials yet about this particular incident, so we have no way of knowing if any of the protesters were hurt or if the driver managed to get away from them (unlikely given the surrounding traffic jam).
What’s clear is that we disagree with the video’s poster in that there’s nothing to “salut” (be impressed with) in this violent video. We really hope the authorities can regain control over today’s protest so it doesn’t descend further into chaos than it already has.
