Several ‘Sevel’ stores in Jakarta could face closure due to permit troubles

Popular convenience store chain 7-11 (or ‘Sevel’ as it is colloquially known here) may see some of its stores relocated or even closed down. Jakarta Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat yesterday held an open meeting with PT Modern Sevel Indonesia Director Hendri Honoris regarding the issue of permits for their convenience stores.

Hendri admitted that some of Sevel’s 172 stores in Jakarta do not own operational permits, which are issued by the provincial government.

“In accordance with the Governor’s Instruction, all outlets must have operational permits. We are gradually adding permits. We were only recently aware about the new type of permit [that we don’t have],” Hendri said at the meeting in City Hall yesterday, as quoted by Merdeka

Hendri did not disclose how many of their stores are still without permit. He said the company is following all procedures to ratify the problem.

“We have to verify [the number of permit-less stores]. If we breached [regulations] then we’re ready to follow instructions from the government. We’re ready to discipline or relocate stores depending on the case,” Hendri said.

Vice Governor Djarot then replied that Sevel stores without the appropriate permit could face relocation or even closure.

“You’ll see. If the permit isn’t up to standard [the store] must be closed or relocated,” he said.
