It looked like Wina Lie, the Yogyakarta woman behind the “Buy this house and you may marry the owner” real estate ad that went viral all over the world, hasn’t met her property prince charming after all.
Last week, Wina told the media that she had finally found a suitable suitor/buyer for her house, a 40-year-old man from Lampung named Redi Eko Saputra. They seemed like a good match – Wina said that Redi was a widower who had children living in Yogyakarta. He was planning to move there anyways to be closer to his kids. So he told Wina he would sell his house in Lampung in order to purchase Wina’s property so they could both live there.
Although they had not met in person, Wina said she had spoken to Redi everyday on the phone for over a month and that the two of them had already grown quite close. They had even planned on making a pilgrimage to Mecca together.
Unfortunately, Redi forgot to mention one little important detail about himself – he wasn’t actually a widower. His wife was actually still alive and still very much married to him.
Even more unfortunately, Wina found out about this after reading about media investigations into her potential fiance, who she was supposed to meet last week.
“He never told me. Yes, I was surprised to read in the media that he was already married. I’m disappointed,” she told Kompas.
Wina tried to take the news in stride, telling reporters she was doing okay despite the bad news. She even said she might have been willing to discuss it with Redi if he had been honest with her from the beginning.
But as it is, Wina’s house and hand in marriage will go unclaimed for now. We hope her next potential homebuyer/husband isn’t such a creep.
