The Jakarta Metro Police has announced that it will patrol and enforce curfew on the hippest neighborhoods of Jakarta to prevent people from partying too late on New Year’s Eve, as a precautionary measure against COVID-19 spread.
Dubbed “Crowd Free Night,” a play on the weekly outdoor exercise event Car Free Day, the police will conduct street patrols to ensure that bars, clubs, and other establishments close by 10pm on Dec. 31 in line with provincial regulations.
“For example, on Mulawarman Street and SCBD we will close [establishments] at 10pm. People won’t be able to go in, but they will be able to leave the establishments,” Jakarta Metro Police Traffic Director Commissioner Sambodo Purnomo Yogo said today, making a reference to two areas popular for nightlife entertainment.
Furthermore, access to areas that traditionally attract crowds on NYE, such as Sudirman and MH Thamrin streets, Kemang, Kota Tua, and Ancol will be closed from 10pm. Street parties and fireworks will also be prohibited.
Shopping malls, tourist attractions, and other entertainment venues will be required to close by 10pm on NYE. Any businesses that defy the restrictions may have their operational permit suspended.
