Say what? Research shows there are 500 thousand drug addicts in Jakarta

A lot of drug-related arrests in Jakarta have made the news lately, perhaps an indication that there is a drug problem in the capital.

Well, according to the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), there totally is.

BNN, referring to a research conducted in 2013 and 2014 by Universitas Indonesia, claim there are currently around 500 thousand drug addicts in Jakarta.

“The population of Jakarta is roughly 9 million. From the latest study done in 2014, 5.5% or around 500 thousand people are still dependent on drugs,” said Ali Johardi, head of BNN Jakarta, as quoted by Vivanews today.

But at least that’s quite a significant drop from previous years, when research showed that there were around 600 thousand drug addicts every year in Jakarta.

Even so, Ali said most drug addicts still refuse to check themselves in to rehab.

“In January 2015, only 20 people underwent rehabilitation. They were either arrested or signed up voluntarily,” he said.

Meanwhile, Vice Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat said the provincial government will soon declare a war on drugs to stamp out illegal narcotics from Jakarta.

“We will keep trying to push down the number of drug addicts,” he said.
