#SAVEKPK from PDI-P: Lawmaker from Jokowi’s party reported KPK Deputy Chief Bambang to police

So the latest twist in today’s episode of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) versus police drama is the revelation that it was a Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) lawmaker that reported KPK Deputy Chief Bambang Widjojanto to the police for allegedly tampering with a witness in 2010, leading to Bambang being arrested this morning.

“The person who made the report was Sugianto Sabran, a member of the House of Representatives,” said National Police Spokesman Rikwanto this afternoon as quoted by Detik

Sugianto is a member of PDI-P, the party of President Joko Widodo and former president Megawati Sukarnoputri.

“The report was made on January 15 regarding a witness committing perjury,” Rikwanto added.

Earlier, police explained the charges more thoroughly, saying Bambang allegedly persuaded witnesses to give false testimonies in court during a regional elections dispute case of West Kotawaringin at the Constitutional Court in 2010. Bambang was a defense lawyer at the time.

Rikwanto would not speculate as to why Sugianto would have made the report almost 5 years after the deed had been done. He said the police had just received the report.

The fact that Sugianto made the report adds further fuel to the speculation that PDI-P chairwoman Megawati is doing everything in her power to make sure her one time adjutant, graft-suspect Budi Gunawan, becomes the chief of the National Police, including weakening the KPK while an uncharacteristically silent Jokowi sits back and does nothing.
