While its concept might be noble, in practice ‘sahur on the road’ (SOTR) is such a terrible idea that even the Jakarta provincial government advised against it while other city administrations have actually banned it altogether.
SOTR, in which people gather on the streets to have the sahur feast before beginning their fasting during the day during Ramadan, led to three brawls happening in different locations in Jakarta on Sunday.
According to Merdeka, the first brawl happened because a group of youngsters having SOTR taunted some teenagers hanging out on the Mampang junction at 12:30 am. The two groups threw rocks and blocks of wood at each other until police came to break up the brawl.
The second brawl was between people having SOTR in Jalan Gajah Mada at 01:20am. This was quickly followed by the third brawl near Blok M Plaza at 01:25am. It was unclear what initiated these brawls.
There were no reported casualties from the event, except perhaps religious dignity.
Maybe it’s time SOTR is banned altogether in Jakarta?
