RSCM refuses cancer patient, media makes it sound even worse by saying it happened on World Cancer Day

To have a patient suffering from retinal cancer turned away by a hospital is horrible enough. To have said patient turned away on World Cancer Day takes it to the next level of horribleness.

That is exactly what Vivanews reported on today. It would’ve been an even more horrible story than it already is, if they had gotten the date of World Cancer Day right.

Vivanews reported that Wina Setianti, a 25-year-old woman from Bogor who suffers from retinal cancer, gave up all hope of getting treatment at the Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital (RSCM) in Salemba, Central Jakarta, after being repeatedly turned away by the hospital.

“We have come often. My wife’s cancer is getting worse. We were hoping she’d get treatment at the RSCM as soon as possible because it’s difficult to travel from Bogor to Jakarta all the time,” said Wina’s husband, Mad Sadi.

Mad said RSCM has so far refused to treat his wife because of faulty cancer treatment equipment and because the hospital is currently still full with other patients.

The couple had been waiting since October 2014.

It’s a heartbreaking story of course, and we hope that Wina gets the treatment she needs as soon as possible. But it seemed Vivanews was really intent on cornering RSCM by pointing out on that they turned down Wina on February 25, which, according to them, is World Cancer Day.

Had they bothered doing even a little bit of research, they would have found out that World Cancer Day is actually on February 4
