Railway connection to Soekarno Hatta Airport to be completed by the end of 2016

Even Medan’s Kuala Namu Airport has a railway connection to the city.

A railway line connecting Jakarta’s train system to Soekarno Hatta Airport was supposed to be completed by July 2015 before the completion date was pushed back to April 2016 because of land disputes.

But now Detik is reporting that the Airport train station and the railway are going to be completed and operational by the end of 2016.

Despite this apparent delay, we’re still hopeful that once the railway project is complete, transportation to the airport is going to get a whole lot more convenient (and hopefully cheaper).

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (PT KAI) is building a 12km-long railway from Batuceper train station (which sits on the Manggarai line) to Soekarno Hatta. Once at the airport, there will be an Automated People Mover System (APMS) – which is just a fancy term for a monorail system – that connects terminals 1, 2 and 3.

“The APMS will be available from the Soekarno Hatta train station. It will loop around Terminals 1, 2, and 3,” said Achmad Syahir, PT Angkasa Pura II public relations manager, as quoted by Detik today.

So it looks like we have no choice but to drive or hail a cab in order to get to the airport until late 2016 (there are also buses and minibus services transporting passengers to and from the airport, but they’re often slow and rarely go directly to the airport).
