The South Jakarta District Court this morning sentenced one of the most infamous terrorist figures in Indonesia, Aman Abdurrahman, to death for his role in masterminding numerous terrorist attacks in Indonesia, including the 2016 attack in Sarinah, Jakarta.

“The decision is the death penalty for convict Oman Rachman AKA Aman Abdurrahman,” said head judge Akhmad Jaini during the sentence hearing, as quoted by CNN Indonesia today.

The media reported that Aman did not show any signs of remorse or distress upon hearing his sentence, instead bowing down to the floor in an apparent show of gratitude to God just after the sentence was read out.

In fact, his defiant behavior was in line with his actions in previous hearings. In May, when case prosecutors demanded that he be given the death penalty, Aman challenged the court to make good on the prosecutors’ demand.

Aman was convicted of planning the deadly attack in Sarinah, Central Jakarta from his jail cell. The attack left eight people dead, including four attackers.

He was also proven to be the mastermind — also from his jail cell — behind the Kampung Melayu bus station suicide bomb last year, which killed three police officers. Other attacks masterminded by Aman included a bombing of a church in the city of Samarinda in 2016, which wounded four children.

Aman is also the ideological leader of Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD), a loosely connected group of ISIS sympathizers in Indonesia believed to be behind last months’ heinous terrorist attacks in East Java and Riau.

The radical cleric said he would not appeal the decision as he does not recognize Indonesia’s laws.
