PT KRL Commuterline Jabodetabek (KCJ) has been planning to introduce 12-car KRL Commuterline trains as an upgrade to the standard 8-cars formation. But to do that, they must ensure that the city’s train stations have platforms long enough to accommodate the longer trains.
KCJ recently announced that it has started work on expanding train platforms at 16 stations.
“Our target is that [the project] be completed by the end of 2015,” said PT KCJ Communications Manager Eva Chairunisa, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.
The 16 stations all sit on the Jakarta-Bogor and Jakarta-Bekasi lines, the two lines deemed busy enough to warrant longer trains to provide more breathing space between passengers.
All trains on the Jakarta-Bogor line have actually been 12-cars long since September 7. But passengers haven’t been able to get onto some of the cars directly from the platforms at some train stations.
PT KCJ is also planning to introduce the 12-cars trains to the Jakarta-Serpong line, though they have not yet revealed when that will happen. With longer trains, PT KCJ is targeting that the KRL Commuterline can transport 1.2 million passengers daily by 2019.
