Provincial government looking to transform Setu Babakan into a floating market

The Jakarta provincial government is drafting up a plan to transform Setu Babakan, a 30-hectare lake in Jagakarsa, South Jakarta, into a floating market.

Setu Babakan is currently a recreational area, but that could soon change as Jakarta’s Small and Medium Enterprises Cooperatives Agency (KUMKMP) has other plans for the lake.

“Last Friday, I, along with Bu Sylvi (Jakarta Tourism Agency deputy head Sylviana Murni) went to the floating market in Situ Lembang, Bandung. We plan to adopt that concept to better organize the kaki lima vendors in Setu Babakan,” said Sri Indrastuti, head of the KUMKMP, as quoted by Vivanews today.

The KUMKMP will work together with an independent contractor to build the floating market and a new tourism spot in Setu Babakan.

The proposal will be brought forward to Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama at the provincial government’s next executives meeting.

We hope the idea comes to fruition, given that Situ Lembang in Bandung is one of our favorite new recreational areas in the neighboring city.
