Coconuts Jakarta Politics

Politics in Jakarta has sadly become an extremely sensitive topic due to its being muddled by religion. Most political talk in Jakarta over the past couple of years has been about Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama – but not about all of the things he’s done for the city, about the fact that he’s a Protestant Christian of Chinese descent, a minority in Indonesia. This particular topic has divided Jakartans, with one group arguing that a Muslim should lead in a Muslim-majority country, and another group arguing that anyone can lead as long as they are capable, regardless of their race and religion. Aside from city-scale politics, Jakarta is, of course, Indonesia’s capital city. As such, it’s where most of Indonesia’s political action and decision making takes place.
