The great mudik exodus from Jakarta, in which millions of people will leave the capital to head to their hometowns all over Indonesia to celebrate Idul Fitri, is always a chaotic experience that leads to numerous accidents and ridiculous traffic.

This year, to try and keep mudik traffic under control, the Jakarta Police will be using high-tech aerial camera drones.

The Jakarta Police’s Traffic director, Commissioner Risyapudin, said the drones will allow for aerial monitoring that can quickly and accurately determine any point prone to congestion. He said that, because the roads will be packed, police are often unable to know and get to the exact source of jams, so the drones will allow them to pinpoint problematic areas and accidents and police can then attend to the specific trouble spots.

“To closely monitor [the traffic situation] we’ll have as many as five drones available to to view the mudik traffic by air. The drone will be used for aerial monitoring because later the streets will be jammed,” Risyapudin said today as quoted by Vivanews.

The traffic chief said the plan is for drones to monitor the flow of traffic from Jakarta towards Eastern Java and from Jakarta to Merak.
