The brutal murder of a motorcycle robber by an angry mob in Pondok Aren, South Tangerang, shocked many in the Greater Jakarta Area. Some of you might have received a broadcast message on Blackberry Messenger (BBM) saying that motorcycle robbers are keen for revenge after the heinous way in which the inflamed mob delivered vigilante justice.
According to Tempo, the broadcast message says that motorcycle robbers are going to roam the streets of South Tangerang looking for revenge. The message also warns people not to be out riding motorcycles after 10pm.
But the police do not believe the broadcast message came directly from the motorcycle robbers.
“The broadcast message is a lie,” said Jakarta Police Spokesman Martinus Sitompul, as quoted by Tempo yesterday.
Martinus said the message was spread by an as-of-yet unidentified jokester, who is doing nothing but spreading fear among citizens.
“It’s best that citizens do not spread the message as well,” he said.
Whether there is any authenticity to the broadcast message or not, it is probably for the best that Jakarta citizens exercise extreme caution when riding a motorcycle, especially at night.
