Police shoot dead leader of gang responsible for fatal shooting of Jakarta businessman

The Jakarta Metro Police are still pursuing leads in the fatal shooting of 31-year-old businessman Davidson Tantono, which took place on June 9, leading to more members of the gang responsible for his cold-blooded murder being arrested.

In the latest update on the case, the police announced today that they have arrested a total of seven suspects, three of them arrested in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Monday evening. One of those three was a suspect identified by the initials SFL, who was believed to be the leader of the group.

SFL was shot dead last night in a reported struggle with the police.

“After we arrested him, we asked him where the gun (used to kill Davidson) was. According to SFL, it was discarded on Jl. Arteri Porong in Sidoarjo, East Java. When we checked at the location, the suspect tried to grab an officer’s gun. There was a struggle between him and the officers, and we decided to act assertively in the situation,” said Jakarta Metro Police spokesman Argo Yuwono, as quoted by BeritaSatu today.

SFL passed away from gunshot wounds as police took him to a nearby hospital.

The police did not specify whether or not they have arrested all of the people responsible for Davidson’s murder.

On June 9, 31-year-old Davidson was fatally shot in the head while he was at a gas station in Daan Mogot, West Jakarta. This case is thought to have been a well-planned robbery as Davidson had been carrying Rp 350 million (US$ 26,000) in cash belonging to investors in his business. The police also believe he was tailed by the group of robbers who spotted that he took out a large amount of cash from a bank.

Shootings are rare in Jakarta largely due to the government’s strict gun control, but in addition to Davidson’s murder, there was another fatal shooting of a young woman three days later. The police believe that the perpetrators could be armed with handmade guns.
