The Jakarta Metro Police have arrested a driver working for an unspecified ride-sharing company — locally referred to as “online taxis” — who allegedly sexually assaulted his passenger and dumped her near Soekarno-Hatta Airport in the early hours of Monday morning.
At 4am on Monday, the victim, a Bekasi resident identified by her initials ABK (27), ordered an online taxi to go to the airport. She was picked up by a driver identified as AN.
According to the police, on the way there, AN drove his car to a dark and quiet road. In the car, he assaulted ABK, removing her clothes and kissing her forcibly, only refraining from raping her after she told him that she was pregnant.
“At the time it was dark and quiet, nobody around. The victim was also scared of being murdered, so she told the perpetrator that she was two-months pregnant,” said Aris Supriyono, head of the Public Crimes Investigation Unit at the Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by Detik today.
AN then took ABK’s phone and dumped her in a quiet area near the Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The police eventually managed to track him down at 6 pm yesterday in Bekasi, where he attempted to evade arrest.
“After the suspect was apprehended, an officer asked him to show the victim’s phone as evidence, but he tried to run away so the office acted assertively by accurately shooting him in the leg,” Aris said.
The police have not yet announced what criminal charges AN will face.
This is the second sexual assault case to make headlines in Jakarta this week, the other one being that of a woman in East Jakarta who was sexually assaulted in a narrow alleyway, CCTV footage of which has gone viral.
