Police say odd-even traffic rule actually won’t apply to motorcycles

The Jakarta Government recently announced that it was planning to start testing an odd-even traffic rule starting on July 20 as a stop-gap solution to the worsening rush hour traffic caused by the removal of the 3-in-1 rule. Previously, the Jakarta Transportation Department had indicated that the odd-even rule would be applied to motorcycles as well as cars, but police are now saying that the rule will not be enforced on two-wheelers.

“As for motorcycles (the odd-even rule) does not apply. It will remain the same as usual,” said Jakarta Traffic Police Enforcement Head Budiyanto on Monday as quoted by Detik.

However, he noted that the current ban on motorcycles entering the stretch of road from Jl Thamrin to Jl Medan Merdeka would remain in effect, as well as the prohibition on motorcycles entering the fast lane from Jl Sudirman to the Hotel Indonesia Roundabout.

The test of the odd-even system will run until August 20 and will be enforced on Jalan Thamrin, Jalan Sudirman, Jalan Gatot Subroto and also Jalan Rasuna Said (the last of which was not previously covered by the 3-in-1 rule) weekdays from 7am to 10pm and 4pm to 8pm. Under the rule, only cars with license plates ending in odd numbers can use those roads during rush hours on odd calendar dates, and vice-versa.
