After President Joko Widodo said he wanted police to take on the pirated “DVD mafia” on Monday, law enforcement officials apparently put on quite a show to demonstrate their seriousness in tackling the problem of pirated DVDs.
In addition to shutting down a DVD factory in Glodok on Monday, they also raided DVD shops on Jalan Pinangsia Raya, Mangga Besar, seizing thousands of DVDs including those with pornographic content.
“The results of the raid was the seizuer of pirated DVDs and VCDs, including porn, as much as two trucks worth,” West Jakarta Police Commissioner Daniel Pasaribu told Kompas on Tuesday.
Daniel said the raid involved 100 detectives, 200 Mobile Brigade (Brimob) officers and 200 public unit (Sabhara) officers.
In addition to the DVD shops raided on Mangga Besar and the factory in Glodok, police also raided a DVD factory in Tangerang that was capable of producing up to 6,000 discs per day.
