Police raid bootleg DVD producing factory in Glodok

It’s probably highly inefficient to go around Jakarta and arrest every single bootleg DVD seller out there, so the police yesterday went straight to the source of the problem: a bootleg DVD factory.

One such factory, as any Jakartan would come to expect, was located in Glodok, West Jakarta, otherwise known as the premier place for finding counterfeit goods in Jakarta.

“There were so many [cops], they came at 4pm in 8 trucks,” said a local woman Suidah, as quoted by Kompas yesterday.

Suidah said police officers broke into the factory and came out carrying boxes of DVDs. They also arrested a few of the factory workers.

This DVD raid will surely be detrimental to the supply of bootleg DVDs throughout Jakarta, especially if the police decide to raid more of the pirate factories.

The raid came just after President Joko Widodo gave a speech yesterday saying he wanted the police to take on the “DVD mafia” by arresting the suppliers instead of the sellers on the streets.
