Police in the East Java city of Mojokerto are in pursuit of a man who allegedly spread intimate videos of his ex that have gone viral online in Indonesia this week.

The victim, an unnamed 19-year-old girl, reported the alleged culprit, a 22-year-old man identified by the initials FR, to the police on Sunday, accusing him of spreading two videos online depicting her and FR naked and getting intimate when they were still dating.

The victim told police that FR spread the videos after she turned down his proposal for marriage and broke up with him.

The police say they are still gathering evidence and have not yet officially named FR a suspect in the case, but are currently in the process of searching for him after he went AWOL some time ago.

“He’s run off since the beginning. Even before this case was widely reported in the news he had run off,” Mojokerto Police Crime Investigation Unit Head Muhammad Solikhin Fery told Detik today.

The Mojokerto Police say they have deployed a task force to locate FR and arrest him.

If arrested, FR may be charged with violating Indonesia’s anti-pornography laws and the Information and Electronic Transactions Act (UU ITE) for spreading indecent materials online. If convicted, FR may be punished with up to five years’ imprisonment.

Even if his ex is shown to be a victim of revenge porn, there is also a possibility that she be charged under UU ITE as well, as its vagueness gives authorities the jurisdiction to criminalize pornographic materials made for private use (as happened to rock star Nazril “Ariel” Irham) or shared between only two people (as almost happened to firebrand cleric Rizieq Shihab).
