“To serve and protect”… but not before this nasi bungkus.
It’s unfair to say all police officers in Jakarta are corrupt and/or lazy, but if incidents like this keep on happening then the police will have a hard time ever shaking off that undesirable reputation.
An unnamed man was severely injured late last night after he fell from his motorcycle on Jalan Yos Sudarso, Kelapa Gading, North Jakarta. Witnesses said he was driving in the busway lane and accidentally brushed his wheels against the separator, which threw him off balance.
According to witnesses, the victim bled profusely after the fall. Many were hesitant to give the victim immediate assistance for fear of injuring him even further.
The victim sat unattended by the side of the road for about 20 minutes when one witness, a woman named Rina, finally decided to do something helpful and reported the accident to a nearby police outpost.
But Rina was shocked to find that the policeman in the outpost straight up ignored her plea for help.
“They say they’re the protector of the people. But when I told them about a dying man on the road, [the police officer] kept on eating his nasi bungkus (wrapped rice). Police officers are disgraceful these days. They don’t know respect and ethics,” Rina told Warta Kota last night.
It turned out Rina wasn’t the only one who encountered the lazy cop.
“I went to the outpost. I was angry there. Can you imagine, we’ve gone back and forth to report the accident, but the police never came. When we went [to the outpost] he was just hanging out there. If [the victim] dies, whose responsibility is it?” said an unnamed witness.
Despite several reports from witnesses, the police never came to the victim’s aid. Luckily, one man decided to help out a fellow citizen and drove the victim to nearby Medi Rose Hospital.
The victim’s condition today is unknown. The police have not yet released a statement regarding the allegations about the lazy cop.
