Police now hunting for murder suspect in Grand Indonesia cyanide coffee case

The passing of 27-year-old Wayan Mirna L Salimin at Olivier cafe in Grand Indonesia on January 8 shocked the city after it was reported that she immediately suffered seizures and then died after drinking from a glass of Vietnamese coffee ordered at the restaurant.

Speculation that Mirna had been poisoned was fueled by early police reports that cyanide had been found in samples of the beverages taken from the crime scene.

On Saturday, police confirmed that they were now certain that the coffee Mirna had been drinking definitely contained cyanide. An autopsy also revealed large amounts of cyanide in Mirna’s body.

Police Brigadier General Alex Mandalikan of the Police Forensics Laboratory said that the concentration of cyanide in the samples tested was extremely high.

“What we were presented amounted to about 15 grams per liter,” said Alex as quoted by Kompas.

Alex then noted that it would only take about 90 milligrams of cyanide to kill a person weighing 60 kilograms.

Jakarta Police have not yet named a suspect in the case but have said they are ready to charge somebody with murder for the crime.

“If it was later proven, yes (they would be charged with) murder,” Jakarta Police Head of Public Relations Commissioner Mohammad Iqbal said on Sunday.

Police said they are still interrogating witnesses in the case.
