On Sunday, the Jakarta Police raided a house in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, and found 29 Chinese nationals believed to be a cyber crime syndicate extorting Chinese government officials and wealthy businessmen. This is the third such incident in which the police have arrested a group of around 30 suspected Chinese cyber criminals just this month.
Police believe that an Indonesian, identified by the initials CN, is the mastermind behind the latest group to be captured.
“So from our investigations this afternoon, we have a prospective new suspect, an Indonesian national who we think is accommodating, coordinating and facilitating [the cyber crime syndicate],” said Jakarta Police Public Crimes Director Khrisna Murti, as quoted by Vivanews yesterday.
The police aren’t yet making a connection between CN and the previous two Chinese cyber crime syndicates that were captured. However, they’re not ruling out that there are other groups working under CN still at large.
The police confiscated Rp 365 million, 31 mobile phones and 22 internet modems from the raid today. Three of the suspects were also found in possession of amphetamines.
Previously, the police arrested 33 Chinese nationals in East Cilandak on May 7 and another 30 Chinese and Taiwanese nationals in Pantai Indah Kapuk on May 12. They were all suspected of being part of a cyber crime enterprise, blackmailing supposedly corrupt politicians and businessmen in China from Jakarta.
