The Jakarta Metro Police, in partnership with the Depok Police, made a huge drug bust involving foreign smugglers in the coastal resort town of Anyer, Banten, near Jakarta.

The police say the traffickers are Taiwanese nationals. One of them, identified as Ling Ming Hui, was shot dead by police after he allegedly resisted arrest.

“The suspect attempted to ram a police officer with a car,” said Jakarta Metro Police Spokesman Argo Yuwono, as quoted by Kumparan today.

The deceased suspect is believed to have been the leader of the trafficking ring. Two others were arrested while one more is still on the run.

The police also confiscated dozens of boxes and sacks containing meth, totaling 1 ton in weight. Officials said they believed the suspects had been selling their illegal narcotics in Indonesia for several months.

Both the Jakarta Metro Police and the Depok Police had been following the Taiwanese drugs syndicate  for the past two months.

Possession of illegal narcotics is punishable by the death penalty in Indonesia. The country had executed foreign nationals in the past for drug possession and trafficking, such as the Bali Nine drug smugglers, despite outcry from the global community.
