It seems everybody’s got something to say about Jakarta ranking last in The Economist’s “Safe Cities Index 2015” report. Especially the police, since, you know, keeping the city safe is mostly their job.

But the Jakarta Police claimed that Jakarta is currently safe and under control despite the occurrence of petty crimes every day.

“If we look around, we see that citizens are still active outdoors. Even in night time we can still see crowds,” said Jakarta Police spokesman Martinus Sitompul, as quoted by Vivanews yesterday.

Martinus added that there’s no need to overreact to The Economist’s report, as the reality is that Jakarta is a relatively safe city.

“In providing safety and security, the police are always there to serve the citizens, and that is enough,” he said.

Do you agree with the police’s assessment about safety in the capital city?
