Police to get CCTV control center to keep eyes on the entire city

Although the Jakarta Government has already set up hundreds of CCTV cameras throughout the capital, you would probably be surprised to learn that the police do not complete access to those camera feeds. But that will change soon.

Jakarta Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama said that city now has a network of CCTV cameras which reach almost all of the capital’s districts and sub-districts, but right now they are only set up to be used by government agencies monitoring conditions such as traffic and flooding. The police do not yet have a way to access all of those same feeds to monitor security and crime.

“So we want to build a command center here (in Police Headquarters),” Ahok said during a visit to Jakarta Police Headquarters earlier today, as quoted by Vivanews

Ahok said that the way the CCTV feeds are set up now, government officials sometimes observe crimes taking place and can do nothing but call the police and inform them about the situation.

The governor said construction on Police Headquarters’ CCTV control center would begin next year and the budget for the project (as well as some new offices and other upgrades to the Kemayoran building) would be Rp 500 billion.

“That budget is still way below the amount required to purchase a UPS, it’s still cheap,” Ahok joked, referring to this scandal.
