Police to extend cyanide coffee murder suspect Jessica Wongso’s custody by another 30 days

The Jakarta Metro Police are taking what is seemingly the last option they have in order to incriminate Jessica Keumala Wongso, the sole suspect in the high-profile murder of Wayan Mirna Salihin in January.

The police have not yet been able to gather sufficient evidence to mount a case against Jessica in the eyes of the Jakarta High Prosecutors. Meanwhile, Jessica’s previous 90-day police custody period has expired, but it looks like she won’t be freed yet.

“[Her custody] has been extended a further 30 days,” said Grand Commissioner Krishna Murti, director of the General Criminal Investigations Unit for the Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by BeritaSatu yesterday.

As previously reported, this is the last custody period extension the police can slap on Jessica. According to the country’s Criminal Code, if the police still can’t gather sufficient evidence against Jessica after 120 days of detention, then she must be released.

Jessica is suspected of killing her friend Wayan Mirna Salihin by poisoning her cup of coffee with cyanide at Olivier Café in Grand Indonesia in late January. Jessica was arrested on January 30 and has been in police custody since. The case has not gone to trial because the Jakarta High Prosecutor has repeatedly deemed the police’s evidence against Jessica to be insufficient.
