A 66-year-old babysitter, identified as Lomrah, has been named the sole suspect in the murder of a three-month-old baby she was hired to care for in the city of Depok, West Java.

According to the police, on Monday, Lomrah, who had only been in the job for four days, was left alone to babysit the baby, identified by her initial M, as her mother went to work. Later that day, Lorah called a motorcycle taxi driver to pick her up from her employer’s house, but the driver decided not to take her on account of her looking suspiciously panicked while holding what appeared to be a lifeless baby.

The motorcycle driver instead alerted the neighbors. One of them, a doctor, went to check on M and found that she was already dead. The police were notified and soon came to the house, arresting Lomrah on suspicion of infanticide.

Lomrah, who has since confessed to killing M, was made to carry out a reenactment of the alleged crime at the scene yesterday, which revealed her physically abusing the frail newborn numerous times.

“So the victim M was ill [with a fever] so she kept on crying. Meanwhile the suspect was fed up with the baby’s crying so she abused her,” Depok City Police Chief Didik Sugiarto said after the reenactment, as quoted by Kompas.

Autopsy results showed that the numerous traumas inflicted on M’s body were consistent with Lomrah’s confession and reenactment.

Lomrah has been charged with murder of an infant under the country’s Child Protection laws and Criminal Code (KUHP). If convicted, she could face up to 15 years in prison.
