Police confirm the arrest of Bambang Widjojanto for a case dating back to 2010

KPK Deputy Chief Bambang Widjojanto

First, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) stated that the National Police Crime Investigations Unit (Bareskrim) arrested Deputy Chief Bambang Widjojanto this morning. Then, acting National Police Chief Badrodin Haiti denied the police had anything to do with the arrest. Now, the police confirmed that they did in fact arrest Bambang over a crime he was suspected of committing in 2010.

“Bareskrim have arrested suspect BW (Bambang Widjojanto),” said National Police Spokesman Inspectorate General Ronny F Sompie, as quoted by Kompas today.

Ronny said the police received a report from an undisclosed source on January 15 regarding a crime Bambang committed in 2010.

Bambang allegedly persuaded witnesses to give false testimonies in court in a regional elections dispute case of West Kotawaringin at the Constitutional Court in 2010. Bambang was a defense lawyer at the time.

Ronny said police investigators found three items of evidence to prove Bambang’s wrongdoing.

Bambang was arrested in Depok at 7:30am today and then taken to Bareskrim headquarters for questioning.
