Police conduct surprise plastic rice inspections in Jakarta’s traditional markets

To make sure that the rice we eat in Jakarta is not synthetic, the Jakarta Police instructed all police departments in the capital to conduct surprise plastic rice inspections at traditional markets.

(Though we wonder why they’d reveal their plans for the “surprise” inspections to the media before they actually do it. Might as well just call it an inspection.)

Nevertheless, the police are preparing to conduct said inspections shortly. In South Jakarta, for example, the police are already eyeing four major traditional markets.

“There will be four markets that we will visit and take samples from. In Pasar Minggu, for example, there are 50 rice kiosks. We’re doing this to head off the spread of plastic rice,” said South Jakarta Police Chief Wahyu Hadiningrat, as quoted by Vivanews today.

Inspections in West Jakarta and Depok have already begun. The plastic rice scare in Depok is especially worrying, after a family in Cipayung, Depok, succumbed to food poisoning suspected to have been caused by consuming plastic rice.
