The latest large scale drug bust in Jakarta began when two Chinese nationals, identified by their initials YMC and CSW, were arrested at Soekarno-Hatta Airport on August 9 for attempting to smuggle 6kg of methamphetamines into the country.

After interrogating the drug smugglers, police learned they were planning on delivering their meth to a hotel in West Jakarta.

“There, we found another Chinese citizen, PCP, who was supposed to receive the 6 kg of meth. From there, the police learned that PCP lived in an apartment building in Kelapa Gading. The police also searched there,” Soekarno-Hatta Police Commissioner CH Patoppoi told Kompas this morning.

Their investigation led them to yet another Chinese member of the drug ring, NKF, who was living in an apartment in Ancol, North Jakarta but using another apartment in Pluit, North Jakarta as a place to store drugs.

In that apartment, police hit the motherload, seizing 88 kilograms of methamphetamines and 186 ecstasy pills. They also found documents leading them to yet another apartment being used for drug storage in West Jakarta. where they found 112,000 ecstasy pills (or enough for a Saturday night at the old Stadium).

Police say the street value of all the drugs seized in the investigation would amount to more than Rp 206 billion. Each of the suspects in the case will face the death penalty for drug smuggling.
