Police believe man who jumped at PIM1 was not attempting suicide

Yesterday morning, shoppers at Pondok Indah Mall 1 were shocked when a man fell to the ground from one of the upper floors, seriously injuring himself.

Photos of the man lying on the mall’s ground floor, bleeding profusely, quickly circulated on social media – as did unsubstantiated stories that it was an attempted suicide.

The man who sustained injuries to his head and right hand, is currently being treated at RS Fatmawati Hospital. Police have been unable to identify the man as he had no ID cards on him and he apparently only laughed when asked his name.

Police believe the man is mentally ill, but that he was not attempting suicide at the mall. After interviewing witnesses, they believe they know why he jumped.

“It was not a suicide. Security officers were trying to secure him because it looked like he was under stress. But when they tried to detain him, he ran away and jumped to the ground floor,” South Jakarta Metro Police Commissioner Aswin told Kompas.
