The Jakarta Metro Police have arrested a security guard at a South Jakarta apartment building on suspicion of sexual assault against a tenant.

According to the police, the suspect, identified as a 31-year-old man by the initials RH, was arrested on Thursday evening for the attempted rape of a 35-year-old Japanese national, identified by her initials AK.

As told by AK’s lawyers to the police, RH was doing his patrol rounds at around 5 am yesterday when he noticed that the door to the apartment belonging to AK was open. He then let himself in and into her bedroom, where he saw her sleeping with barely any clothes on.

“According to the suspect’s interrogation, he had his eye on the victim for a while and he knows her well,” AK’s lawyer Hervan Merukh told the media today, as quoted by Antara.

AK reportedly jolted awake and screamed when RH was attempting to rape her, causing him to panic. She managed to fight him off and locked him out of the apartment.

At some point during the incident, RH also allegedly threatened to kill AK and demanded IDR5 million (US$350) from her.

Attempted rape is a crime punishable by up to eight years in prison. AK’s lawyers say they have also sued the apartment’s management and security services provider in light of the incident.
