On Tuesday, authorities arrested an Australian and a New Zealander who were suspected of working as chiropractors in South Jakarta without the appropriate permits. Just yesterday, the police continued their crackdown on unlicensed medical practitioners by arresting two Australian chiropractors.
The suspects were identified as brothers Antony and Thomas Dawson.
“Antony is the owner [of the chiropractic clinics], whereas Thomas is the doctor, except that he isn’t actually a doctor,” said Grand Commissioner Krishna Murti, director of the Public Crimes Investigation Unit for the Jakarta Metro Police, as quoted by Tempo today.
Krishna said that the police arrested the brothers at their house after both tried to escape arrest by climbing through the roof.
The brothers reportedly owned and ran six chiropractic clinics in Jakarta, which are located in Dharmawangsa, Pacific Place mall, and Gandaria City mall among others, as well as one in Bali.
The death of Allya Siska Nadya last year, which authorities suspect was caused by malpractice committed by American chiropractor Randall Cafferty, was the spark that drove various government health agencies and the police into cracking down on medical clinics and foreign medical professionals who they now say are working illegally in Indonesia.
