Police anticipating increase in counterfeit dollar notes as rupiah falls to Rp 14K per US Dollar

There’s no better time than now to go to a money changer to exchange the US Dollar into rupiah (unless the rupiah gets even weaker in the future). Criminals who own counterfeit dollar notes are probably thinking the same thing.

But hold on, criminal. The police are on to you. They’re taking measures to make sure that no counterfeit dollar notes are exchanged for our precious rupiah.

“As of now, there haven’t been any cases [of people exchanging counterfeit dollars]. But we’re increasing our vigilance against counterfeit money,” said Budi Waseso, head of the National Police’s Crime Investigation Agency (Bareskrim), as quoted by Tempo yesterday.

We’re not sure what these cautionary measures are, but Waseso said Bareskrim are working together with Bank Indonesia and the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) on the issue.

Now we get why we have to show our IDs and write down our addresses whenever we exchange money.
