While rainy season has been well in affect in Jakarta for many weeks now, this afternoon marked the first truly extreme downpour of the season, the first to cause serious flooding throughout numerous parts of the capital and the first real test of Governor Anies Baswedan’s preparations for and response to combat the banjir.
According to the Jakarta Disaster Management Agency, heavy rains hit most of the Greater Jakarta Metro area but rainfall that could be classified as “extreme” hit certain areas of South Jakarta, West Jakarta, East Jakarta and North Jakarta from around 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm this afternoon. Their data shows that the highest intensity rain hit South Jakarta at 1:43 pm at a rate of 288 mm/day.
The brief but extreme bout of rainfall created serious flooding in several spots around the city that didn’t experience severe banjir during the last rainy season such as Jalan Rasuna Said in Kuningan. The major South Jakarta thoroughfare experienced flooding as high as 30-40 cm high in some sections according to Viva, forcing drivers to slowly wade their vehicles through the flood waters.

The Jakarta Police Traffic Management Center’s Twitter account has dutifully retweeted photos from across the capital warning travelers about the various levels of flooding in different areas as well as fallen trees. Judging from their photos and media reports much of the worst flooding took place around South Jakarta.

Even part of Jalan Sudirman near the iconic Hotel Indonesia Roundabout going towards Semanggi saw some flooding, enough to severely slow down traffic in the area.

Naturally the flooding has wreaked havoc on traffic throughout the capital as motorists attempt to avoid or carefully navigate the slowly receding waters. Stay safe and stay dry folks!
