Pertamina to stop selling Premium fuel in large cities starting in May

Well, it seems just about everything is getting more and more expensive these days.

State-owned oil and gas firm PT Pertamina says it will gradually cut off its supply of Premium fuel to large cities starting in May, making way for a new, more expensive fuel.

“Gradually, in city centers, there won’t be Premium fuel. We’ll replace it with a special fuel that is higher in quality than Premium. Its RON (Research Octane Number) and is more expensive [than Premium], but it’s still cheaper than Pertamax RON 92,” said Pertamina Marketing Director Ahmad Bambang, as quoted by Detik yesterday.

“We start this May. The name and the logo of the Premium replacement is still being made. It will be slightly more expensive than Premium, but definitely cheaper than Pertamax 92.”

The upgrade to a higher quality fuel than Premium has actually been in the works for a while. The Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry has given Pertamina until 2017 to completely eradicate its supply of Premium fuel to Indonesia.

The price of Premium fuel currently fluctuates according to global oil prices. At the moment, Premium fuel in Jakarta costs Rp 7,400 per liter, whereas the higher quality Pertamax RON 92 fuel costs around Rp 8,600 per liter.
